QUOTES ABOUT NUMBERS

  • Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.
              Albert Einstein (1879-1955), attributed
From the Notices of the American Mathematical Society 53(2006)1049.

  • Wherever there is number, there is beauty.  Proclus (AD 412-485).

USNews RANKING OF LAW SCHOOLS

  • THE GOLD STANDARD OF LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS has been provided by the U.S. News and World Report (USN) publication Best [American] Graduate [and Professional Schools]. The original US News Law School Ranking ranked the TOP TWENTY (1987). The top ten and the top sixteen of the November 1987 ranking of law schools are still the same (albeit their order has changed).

  • Every year, USNews and World News assigns a number to each law schools considered (199 law schools for 2012); this number is called the Overall Score (a/k/a Score). The scores of the 2012 top 145 law schools have been made public. In the natural way, these scores determines the rank of the law schools.

  • The original US News Law School Ranking ranked the TOP TWENTY (1987). The top ten and the top sixteen of the November 1987 ranking of law schools are the same (albeit their order has changed).

  • DETERMINING THE SCORE AND THE RANK. The 2012 USNews ranking of 190 accredited law schools are based on a weighted average of four factors: Assessment (40%), Selectivity (25%), Placement Success (20%), and Faculty Resources (15%). For each law school, a weighted average of these four factors determines a number. This number is divided by the largest number given to a law school and then multiplied by 100 giving, by definition, each law school a SCORE. In the natural way, the SCORES determine the RANKS of the law schools. By the way the SCORE is determined, the law school with the largest number has a SCORE of 100.
As an example, we shall find the SCORE of a law school with number 256 assuming the largest number given to a law school (presumably Yale) is 343. We just divide 256 by 343 giving us 0.746; multiplying by 100 shows us that the SCORE of a law school with number 256 is 74.6.

  • We make some suggestions for IMPROVING RANKINGS.
