2008 SUMMER PRELAW PROGRAMS TYPES OF PROGRAMS AND ADVICE |
| |
TYPES OF PRELAW SUMMER PROGRAMS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS. Tuition and fees vary but oftentimes tuition and fees are about $1000/week (the exception is the Charles Hamilton Houston Law School Preparatory Institute) with travel and room and board extra. PROGRAMS FOR MINORITY AND UNDER-REPRESENTED POPULATIONS. Under ideal conditions there is no tuition and no fees, room and board are free, some travel expenses are paid, and a weekly allowance is given. We do not always have ideal condiions. |
APPLY EARLY. Early applications oftentimes have an advantage. MISSING A DEADLINE. A phone call should tell you how strict the deadline is. |
|
HOUSING ACCOMODATIONS. Even though most of these enrichment programs listed are offered on a university campus, with the exception of the Ohio State University/Oxford University, most of these enrichement programs make no mention of on-campus housing although renting a hotel room is considered. During the summer, visiting college students may find that some dorms (university owned or private) and some fraternities and sororities rent out rooms at a reasonably rate. If you are on a low-budget plan, you may want to consider this option. First check the Housing Office at the appropriate university. |

2008 SUMMER PRELAW ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS ONE, FIVE, OR SIX DAYS |
| |
| |
| COMMENTS ABOUT THESE SHORT-TERM PROGRAM. The two following short-term programs (both five or six days) seem to have merit. For the following discussion, we shall assume that this is the case. We can recommend these programs to a serious prelaw student who can easily commute to the program. For those not within reasonable commuting distance, the time, inconvenience, and expense of traveling to the program combined with the expense of a hotel room along with being forced to eat restaurant food for six days (and, almost as bad, being forced to pay for it) may outweigh the benefits to be gained from the program. If you attend the Law Preview Program, we recommend the six-day program. |
| WANT A ONE-WEEK PROGRAM IN CHICAGO? Check out the Law Review Program AND the Northwestern University Pre-Law Review Program. Both have Chicago programs. |
| |
|
2008 LAW PREVIEW PROGRAM COMMENT ABOUT THIS WEBSITE. The Law Preview Program's website is very informative and probably the best of the ones in this section. DATES AND LOCATIONS. This program is offered at thirteen locations around the nation. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM. The participants have three choices: One-day program (Legal research & writing workshop ) Five-day program (Overview of core first-year law school courses and lectures on academic success) Six-day program (This combines the five-day program and the one-day program). TUITION. Register by May 1 for lowest tuition. A discount of $100 is available to Princeton Review LSAT prep students and a discount of $100 is available for entering students at New York U, U Pennsylvania, Florida Coastal, or John Marshal. If you are eligible for both of these discounts, you can receive both if you rergister by phone (508-746-4660). HOUSING. "While hotel accommodations are not included as part of your Law Preview tuition, we do have partner hotels in each city that provide our students with a special rate. In an effort to keep your costs down, we will even match you up with a roommate." GENERAL INFORMATION. The key points about the program are given. THE PROFESSORS TEACHING IN THE PROGRAM. 2008 NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PRE-LAW SUMMER INSTITUTE THIPROGRAM LOCATION. Chicago, at the Northwestern University School of Law (357 E. Chicago Avenue) PROGRAM DATES (Five days). Monday, June 23 - Friday, June 27, 2008 (Tentative) CONTACT E-MAIL ADDRESS. summer@northwestern.edu CONTACT PHONE NUMBER. 847-491-5250 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION. An introduction to five main topics: The American legal system, legal writing (case briefs), analysis (rule synthesis), sources of law, and the components of oral argumentation. Throughout the five-days, panels of experts will focus on the law school admissions process, tips for success in the first year of law school, and careers in the legal profession. HOUSING. Finding a hotel near the institute is their recommendation. What will cost more: housing, or tuition and fees? TUITION AND FEES. This information is not in the website. For someone with no connection to Northwestern, the 2007 tuition and fees were $1295. TARGETED AUDIENCE. Not within my knowledge. Junior, senior, or college grad would be my guess. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS. Not within my knowledge. DEADLINE. Probably some time in June. COMMENT 1. This progran is not selling used cars. This is a reputable program being offered by a reputable university. Ipso facto, the tuition and fees for this program should be very explicit; from a phone call, I found out the 2007 tuition and fees. Also the website announcing this program should be on-line by December of the preceding year. COMMENT 2. It would be nice to know the "Targeted Audience" and the "Admission Requirements." COMMENT 3. The website (December 18, 2007) indicates that "Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate of completion, a distinguishing credential that can be included in their application to law school." Will this certificate of completion be "a distinguishing credential?" If attending all the sessions is sufficient to receive this certificate then this certificate will not be "a distinguishing credential." |
